International Women’s Day is such a wonderful way to applaud the efforts and successes of women from all walks of life, all over the world on the 8th March.
This day is dedicated to women, to our achievements, and for our continuing journey to build a kinder, safer, and more informed world for all.
The theme for International Women’s Day, 2022 is ‘Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow’, and more specifically the “contribution of women and girls around the world, who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, to build a more sustainable future for all.”
This is an inspirational theme, as we all would like to work towards climate change and a more sustainable future for our families and the earth.
We are also inspired and awed by the efforts of women who have changed the world through their fight for equality.
Emmeline Pankhurst who marched and worked to be granted equal voting rights with men in 1928.
Li Tingting who was detained for 37 days in 2015 for planning an International Women's Day campaign to raise awareness of sexual harassment on public transportation in China
Malala Yousafzai who opposed the Taliban's restriction of girls and women in education, was shot in 2012 and seriously wounded by the Taliban at age 15, and has since worked tirelessly for human rights.
Incredible women working tirelessly.
So how about the rest of us? We are the women who make political decisions for the future each time we vote (thanks Emmeline), who teach their sons and daughters about respect and consent, who encourage and support our girls to achieve at school and work towards their dreams.
We too deserve recognition.
And this recognition begins within ourselves.
This IWD let’s also celebrate ourselves, women who have been everything to everyone, often before our own dreams and passions, ensuring those we love have a satisfying and sustainable future. Let us make a promise to start focusing on our own sustainability through some self love and self care. Let’s celebrate our personal achievements and reward ourselves.
On this day and every day forward take the time to ask yourself “what do I want today, what do I need today, how can I celebrate myself?”
Firstly let go of any guilt you may feel, we can all be so hard on ourselves, let go and reward yourself. Stay in your pyjamas all day and read a book, take a long leisurely walk by the river, sit by the ocean with a coffee and watch the waves roll in, or have a beautiful facial or massage.
No matter the magnitude of other women’s incredible achievements, remember that everything you have ever done has in some wonderful way contributed to a better world, and that now taking time to take of yourself ensures you keeping on doing so.
Congratulations to you on International Women’s Day!
